How is suicide defined?
Suicide can be defined as any act where a person tries to harm themselves with the intent to end their life. A suicide attempt is when they try to hurt themselves, but do not die as a result. However, a suicide attempt does not always result in physical injury. Roxanne Dryden-Edwards (2016) defines suicide as “the act of purposely ending one 's own life. How societies view suicide varies widely according to culture and religion. For example, many Western cultures, as well as mainstream Judaism, Islam, and Christianity tend to view killing oneself as quite negative.” One common misconception about suicide is that it is always the result of mental illness. That is not always true. Some societies treat suicide as a crime, while others treat is as an honor.
A brief history of suicide
Suicide has been happening since Ancient Greece, where it was not thought of as wrong, as long as it was justified. In Ancient Rome, suicide was a supported idea. For example, instead of living a decrepit elderly life, suicide was acceptable in that situation. During the Middle Ages, suicided was thought to be brought on by madness and despair. Often the dead body was publicly disgraced. Suicide has continued through the Renaissance and 19th century, and in to the present day. The first suicide prevention center was in Los Angeles.
