Is Australia Doing Enough to Prevent Youth Suicide-
Good morning to you all, it is my pleasure to be speaking here today at this annual Mental Health conference. As an experienced counsellor as well as a mother of teenagers, I believe our country isn’t doing enough to prevent youth suicide.
The never ending chain of people affected by youth suicide is undeniable.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), new data shows an upward trend in the rate of suicide among young people aged 15-19, and the overall rate of suicide among young people aged 20-24 remains stubbornly stable. Staggeringly, suicide is the leading cause of death among those aged between 15 and 30 more than any other cause and far exceeds road accidents, cancer and assault. However this is just the beginning, we need more programs to be advertised efficiently and for such programs to be included in school curriculums. As a nation we should be constantly be educating the youth about the prevention of suicide and creating an understanding and accepting society so that teens aren’t afraid to speak up and ask for help.
The fact is, as individuals, who are part of communities and part of Australia, we should all be taking action sooner rather than later. We should make others around us feel open to talk about such significant topics. The media should deal with suicides appropriately and respectfully. Professionals should be responsive and caring. Parents should be educated and offered support and youths should be supported and encouraged to communicate. There can never be enough done when it comes to suicide prevention, and Australia needs to focus and incorporate multiple strategies.
