Students Should Be Taught In High School

Students all over the United States are being tested over how much they memorized from the beginning of the school year to the end of their school year. These standardized tests help define where a child stands in their academic level. Although, these tests may help academically, what happens when a child is put in a cardinal situation and the only answer they can provide is the square root of 32 or when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue? Schools should provide situations that allow children to think and overcome these issues. When teenagers graduate high school and enter college, their whole world is flipped upside down.They won’t have teachers sugarcoating things anymore, take slotted notes, or be given most of the answers to worksheets. They need to learn to dig deep and pull answers from the depths of their minds. These certain things could have been taught in high school. Students should learn how to think …show more content…
Critical thinking could provide a safer and more productive future for the upcoming adults. State education departments require so much essential material to be taught in such little time that critical thinking can’t be incorporated into the classes. In the following statement, Frank Breslin says, “In order to cover the curriculum, courses must be taught quickly, superficially, and uncritically, the infallible way of boring students.This is a great source of frustration to teachers, who would rather teach their courses in depth in order to give students an informed understanding of the issues involved”(Why Public Schools Don't Teach Critical Thinking-Part 1, Frank Breslin).
