Assignment 2 Our student union is home to quite a few fast food chains. One of the chains, is one I frequent a lot: Subway. Subway was first founded in the year of 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It quickly rose to fame over the next few decades and is now one of the fastest growing fast food chains in the world. Currently holding the world record for most single-brand restaurant chains in the world, Subway has around 44,852 outlets in over 100 countries as of September 2016. Operation managers’ roles depend on the size of a company, but since subway is a relatively larger company, a manager in this position would have to be managing many things. Mainly, the resource management of each of the ingredients and other utensils that customers will use, as well as the financial management side of the business. An operation manager should make sure that they are accurately accounting for the demand for their outlet and managing finances. They also have to make sure that once they’ve received the ingredients, they are stored properly to continue ensuring their freshness. It’s also important to note that Subway employs a make-to-order system allowing them to retain their motto of freshness. Another operational management challenge that Subway at the student union would have to deal with is managing long customer lines. Most of the time I pass by the student union Subway, I’ve noticed that there are extremely long lines. They have a great system in place to weave the line in the store to conserve space and allow for as many people as possible to be in the line at any given time. However this isn’t restricted to just Subway, as just about every restaurant in the student union has this line system in place, but it’s still a useful
