The biggest risk factor of autism is if the parents were advanced in age at the time of conception. This means that if the mother/father was seventy and they conceived a child, this child would be more likely to develop autism in the uterus. Another risk factor of autism is if the mother gets sick during pregnancy.…
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It is the fastest growing developmental disability in the US. One in 70 boys is diagnosed with Autism compared to one in 315 girls. 1. I used the search terms “parent intervention for toddlers” on the One Search database. I chose to use this article in particular because it met criteria for the assignment (i.e. single research study written by the researchers who conducted the study). The reference for the article is: Kasari, C., Gulsrud, A., Paparella, T., Hellemann, G., & Berry, K. (2015). Randomized comparative efficacy study of parent-mediated interventions for toddlers with autism.…
It states that parents often isolate themselves from social activities due to the fact that their child exhibits challenging behavior patterns that many people do not understand. Often, parents have trouble maintaining social relationships and are at an increased risk of suffering from depression. The point of this article was to assess a group of parents’ experiences parenting a child with autism. Then, that knowledge was used to develop…
It is theorized that their anxiety levels are higher because of the behavior problems and higher involvement of teachers, parents, and therapists (van Steensel 2015). When a child is being diagnosed with autism, one of the factors that doctors must rule out first is ADHD. These disorders are the most common among children and a symptom of both is the impairment of their executive functions (Lawson 2014). “The task of doctors is to distinguish whether the impairment is a deficit in shifting/flexibility, and behavioral inhibition/ impulse control” (Lawson 2014). Deficits in shifting and flexibility are a characteristic of autism.…
All non-autistic siblings were asked to complete the Children’s Depression Inventory Short Form and Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale. Participating parents were also asked complete the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Parent Rating Scales and a general demographic questionnaire (Macks & Reeves, 2006). Macks and Reeves (2006) maintain that non-autistic siblings appear to have a stronger self-concept whether this is because the non-autistic sibling compares their capabilities to the child with autism or due to a difference in level of maturity—this maturity level leading to improved behavior and social skills remains to be determined. Parents reports of the non-autistic siblings was interestingly more negative than parents without any children with autism. Macks and Reeves (2006) speculate that this could be due to lack of parent involvement and projection of frustrations.…

Autism spectrum disorder can be classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, which relates to anything that affects the development of the nervous system, this disorder impairs those who are diagnosed by causing them to have the inability to communicate and interact with others. At times it can also include restricted repetitive behavior, interests and activities. This specific disorder has no cure, affecting a victim for their whole life, which will make it hard for a mother or father when they get told that their child might be autistic. Many parents choose to take the heartache differently.…
We are all social beings; we all want someone by our side. Rumors have stated that individuals with autism are unable or unwilling to form meaningful social relationships. However, the truth could not be farther than that. These rumors consume the truth slowly, but truth prevails. Although individuals with autism have difficulty with social interaction, despite this difficulty, one with autism can still have close social relationships, fall in love and have children (Autism myths, page 2).…
For the following assignment, I had the pleasure to interview a parent whose child has autism. I am very thankful for this parent telling me the information about their child as it is going to help me become a better teacher as well as a better person. For some people, it can be a very touchy subject but I am thankful that this parent was very open-minded. I now am aware of the problems and situations that a parent goes through on an everyday basis with a child with a learning disability.…

Children often have trouble with socializing and communicating. The main symptom of autism is difficulty socializing. As children with autism get older they may have trouble understanding voice or facial expressions. This makes it difficult for them to know how to respond in social situations.…
It is really difficult to take care of a person with autism. During our class we were lucky enough to have these two parents share their experience about their son named Marcus who was diagnosed in the spectrum for Autism. The mothers name was Sadie and the fathers name was Rodie I believe. Some of the potential difficulties of having a child with autism are because they have trouble with communication and socialization. Another reason that can be considered a potential difficulty is that they have restricted and repetitive behavior.…
