There were two prisoners, David Sweat and Richard Matt, that had escaped from a New York Prison in Clinton. They accomplished it by, using hacksaws that were hidden in meat and sawing through the cells to the catwalks behind their cells. Then David Sweat used a saw to cut into fellow inmate Richard Matt’s cell to the same catwalks. They then had weeks to look through the maze of tunnels that were hidden below the prison. The men had one obstacle in their way, a cement wall in the sewer that went out of the prison. The cement wall was the only thing that stood in the men’s way of freedom. When the prison decided to turn the pipe off that heated the prison, the inmates took that as their way out and cut through the …show more content…
Sweat began sawing through the wall behind his bed last winter and did that every night after he started. When they did not do their nightly patrols, that is when the window opened for an escape. “Convicted killer David Sweat escaped from his prison cell not once, not twice, but almost every night for several months, a source briefed on the investigation told CNN” (Report: New York). If the prison had completed nightly patrols, they would have spotted the prisoner out of his cell and could have called for a lockdown, but instead the prison had one head count before the night at 23:30 (11:30pm) and one in the morning at 05:30 (5:30am) giving the prisoners 6 hours to do whatever they needed to do. Why would this work, looking at inmate in their sleep? Well, for one, you do get to see if all the inmates are in their cells and still sleeping. If they aren't then you can tell if there is an prison escape going on or if one of them is hiding and waiting for the guards to call for lights out. All prisoners have is time to plan how to escape prison or think about who put them in there. Yes, a lot of the time they do their time and forgive those who put them in there, but those who think of ways to escape and about revenge are the ones who need to be looked out for. So looking in on prisoners at night would make them know that they are being watched and they cannot do what they are planning. If the guards …show more content…
However, they did not look at the blueprints or the piping going into the prison and the two inmates who escaped used a heating pipe to crawl out of and go to a manhole to the other side of the prison wall. They could have put bars or some means of stopping the two men who escaped, however they did not and suffered the consequences. If they would have just looked at the blueprints, they could have seen that a pipe big enough for a man to crawl through whet to the outside of the prison walls and had no bars or even a grate to keep people who were supposed to be in cells, in the facility. “On June 5, the men both went through the tunnels and ended up at a manhole near the prison facility in the town of Dannemora”(Richard Matt). The prison might have been able to stop the men from the escape in this case by putting big metal bars on the pipe that lead out to the manhole and would have stopped the men in their tracks. Instead of doing that they were able to crawl out of the pipe like in “The Shawshank Redemption”. This would cut down on people who would follow movies, and TV shows like the popular Netflix show “Prison Break”. So, who else has used his surroundings and escaped from a prison? That would have to be Alfred Wetzler, who escaped from Auschwitz death camp during the
