The Eastern State Penitentiary was constructed in 1824, and was closed down in 1971 (Baird). The prison was known for its cruel and unusual punishments, some would kill the prisoners if they made a sudden movement. There were multiple torture weapons used for punishment towards the prisoners like, the Iron Gag, the Mad Chair, the Hole, and the Water Bath. The Iron Gag was a iron collar clamped onto the prisoner's tongue, then chained to the prisoner's wrists that were place high on the prisoner's back. The Mad Chair was a chair that they strapped the prisoners in so they could not move at all, they were left in the chair for several hours and given very short breaks so blood flow does not stop to parts of the body. The famous Al Capone spent 8 months in the prison and claimed he was tormented and haunted by ghosts while in the prison. Workers said that they could hear Capone say, " Go away, leave me alone!" Another person, Gary Johnson, said that when we had opened a lock in Cell Block 4 he has grabbed, but he was the only one there at the time. He claimed to be a ghost that had grabbed him. Multiple reports say that you can see ghostly faces in Cell Block 4 (Creepy Ghost Stories). More reports say that you can hear laughing and cackling in Cell Block 12 (Baird).
