Wabash County Jail Research Paper

The Heartland Criminal Justice class travelled to the Wabash County Jail [WCJ] and the Huntington County Jail [HCJ]. Both jails are equally as important, but there are many similarities and differences between the two jails. A few of the differences included how many inmates each jail could hold, the garage sizes and uses, and the jobs that the trustees were given. An important similarity to note about both jails was the fact that both were overpopulated. However, one was overpopulated by a few, while the other was overpopulated by a lot. The Wabash County Jail has the ability to hold 72 inmates. They are currently holding 96 inmates. These trustees can get special jobs, some of the jobs differing on which jail they are in. At the Huntington County Jail the female trustees are usually put to work in the gardens. Male and female trustees can also do community service. One of the jobs that they do is paint lines on football fields before the games. At the Wabash County Jail the trustees are usually put to work in the laundry or the kitchen or can sometimes be treated like informants. The Wabash County Jail also has Community corrections. Inmates eat and sleep in the prison, but are able to go to day jobs. After they are off work, however, they must go straight back to the prison. The Wabash County Jail and the Huntington County Jail have many similarities, but there are also important differences. The Huntington County Jail has a larger capacity for inmates than the Wabash County Jail. Huntington County Jail also has a larger garage area than Wabash County Jail. Both Jails have “trustees” that get specific jobs, though the jobs differ from jail to jail. The Wabash County Jail does have a specific opportunity that the Huntington County Jail does not have, which is community corrections. Even through the differences, both jails serve their
