The delicate, green grass sways in the wind, the pure, white clouds glide across the blue sky, and the warm, pulsing sun fills the surrounding air with comfort. Another summer day spent outside in the beautiful outdoors, swimming in the pool, going for a stroll, and grilling hot dogs with the neighbors. But before eating that beloved American treat, consider investing some time into research for just what exactly makes up a hot dog, and how they transform from animal, to meal. Truthfully, the behind the scenes in the hot dog industry is not a pretty sight. Granted, not all companies have identical methods, but they’re all basically the same. It begins with numerous animals as they’re raised for slaughter, their leftover meat scraps are blended together and packaged as hot dogs to be later sold to the blind consumer through the endless advertisements. …show more content…
Obviously, hot dogs are no exception. An endless amount of pigs are cycled in and out of gestation and farrowing crates to give birth and feed their young until their bodies can no longer handle it. The cages are so small that most mother pigs are unable to make nests for their children, and end up staying completely still for most of their lives. The rest are sent off to be raised in severely crowded pens and given only the attention and care they require to survive. The pigs who are unable to grow up healthy at a sufficient rate are killed and thrown away, meanwhile, those who manage to survive the horrible endeavor are shipped off into crowded trucks and sent on their way to the slaughterhouse. The employees stack the pigs inside the trucks with no room to move or be comfortable. It doesn’t matter whether or not it’s in unbearable heat or nearing absolute zero, they’re still packed into trucks to prepare for
