Although universities offer courses for songwriting, there is no need for a higher education. Music publishers care very little if a songwriter has had any training, rather they only care about the product that the songwriter can produce.
Songwriters advance in their career by writing hits for bigger artists. Top writers who consistently write or co-write hit songs can earn tens of millions of dollars. Unfortunately due to the setup of the profession the majority of writers earn very little significant income in the career and are required to work day jobs to support themselves.
This can be attributed to the fact that technically there is no real job as a songwriter. A songwriter effectively works for themselves on their own hours. The exception to this would be when a writer is hired by to create songs for a specific agency such as TV, advertisement, or a theme park. For this reason the goal of the majority of songwriters is to be hired as a staff-writer. As a staff-writer the songwriter in question has signed an exclusive agreement with a song publishing company that everything written during the term of your contract will be published by the company. As long as a successful quota of songs are filled and make money for the company the contract will be continued. The advantages of becoming a staff-writer are numerous. The company will allow a network of access that would have been previously unavailable as well as a vested interest in promoting the work of the songwriter.
