Bernard is an outcast and disagrees with the ideals of society. Society makes people take a drug called soma, but Bernard does not agree with society's control on how people should feel. When approached by Henry Foster to take soma, Bernard refuses to take it. This shows that not everyone in this society such as Bernard has the same views on soma. Society doesn’t allow exclusiveness and long-term commitments such as marriage. Back in the Savage Reservation, John confesses his love for Lenina and wants to marry her. John wanting to marry Lenina ,which is something forbidden shows that some people do want exclusiveness than to have anyone they want whenever they want. Although John wants to belong, he despises soma and the control it has on its people. In the hospital after witnessing Linda’s death, John attempts to protest and persuade the Deltas to not take soma. Society controls everyone’s thoughts and emotion, but John defies the norms and tries to free the Deltas. Therefore, John demonstrates his will to free himself of the control of the world state and all their rules. To add, John believes in something that the community has forgotten and that is art. At the Savage Reservation, John was watching Lenina sleep and was expressing his feelings by reciting Shakespeare. This shows that some people especially John prefer to have literature particularly Shakespeare, even though it is against the community’s rules. Despite the society’s rules of getting rid of art, John is still a firm believer and will question the community every chance he gets. Helmholtz wants be in control of his own work and himself even though it's forbidden to express your own thoughts. When talking to Bernard, Helmholtz expresses his thoughts on wanting to be able to do more and to write his own thoughts then what the controllers have given him. This shows that as much as the citizens in particular Helmholtz are conditions, the world state can never enable one's ability to have his or her own thoughts and emotions. Helmholtz begins to think that he can do more and that he is capable of doing more. This type of attitude displays his different mindset and thought process is different from others and that society will not control the way he thinks. In addition, as a professor, Helmholtz can only teach the material given to him ,but decides to think for himself and shares his own work. At the university, Helmholtz teaches his Advanced Emotional Engineering third year students about the topic of being alone. More importantly, this shows that Helmholtz wants to break free from the ideologies set by society that everyone is happy by teaching his own students the topic of being alone.In addition, society wants everyone to consume soma and to obey this rule, but Helmholtz doesn’t follow this rule.
