The best way to show how freedom is taken away from the characters in the story is the caste system. The caste systems are predestined before anything is done, it’s the first priority. Caste System consist: Alphas are the smartest, strongest, and the leaders, they are able to have some freedom. Betas are second in the order and just a little below the Alphas, still considered important with little freedom. Gammas is when the freedom starts to diminish in the caste system, they will only perform the basics. Deltas have the limited freedom and can’t function on their own, they always need a supervisor. Epsilons have no freedom and will perform the smallest amount of work among the caste. The different type work done in each cast will differ among the caste because of the different intelligence level and the amount of freedom among the caste. Each person in their own caste system can never change the level of their society they will always be an Alpha or always an Epsilon. This shows how freedom really is downgraded in this society. The lower caste can never improve because of their conditioning. Throughout the story, this aspect is constantly mentioned with the main characters of Bernard Marx and John who is part of the savage reservation where freedom is accepted. John questions one of the controllers Mustapha why freedom is not valued in their society Mustapha tells John "We are not our own any more than what we possess is our own. We did not make ourselves, we cannot be supreme over ourselves. We are not our own masters.” (Huxley 232). If freedom was valued in Brave New World, they all would be their own masters and be able to advise their own actions.
