Society impacts a person’s way of thinking. When someone is told something for the first time, they usually will be influenced to believe in it. If a person is asked about their favorite sports team, most of the time, their favorite team is their parents favorite team. This is because they were probably exposed to that sport, for the very first time, with that team. When someone sees a negative advertisement towards a group of people, their impression is to dislike it as well. In the story The Scarlet Letter, the people in the town of Boston had a bias toward people who committed adultery. Their introduction to adultery was that all adulterers were evil and impure. In recent events, people who couldn’t accept the outcome of the presidential election grouped together because they had similar beliefs, and protested the democratic verdict. These herd mentalities are formed when people are tempted by a sort of peer pressure by a group or community. In the book The Crucible, the people of Salem formed a mob mentality toward accused witches. Their society was based around faith and religion. Once the church began to arrest the women accused of witchcraft, the people began to form their mob mentality. They were influenced by society to hate those women because they were told to do so.
