Social Media and Technology – Literature Review In the past few years, today’s society has experienced the rapid proliferation of new information technologies referred to as social media that support interpersonal communication and collaboration through Internet-based platforms. Some of the most common social media tools are social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook that have hundreds of millions of users on a daily basis. The popularity and increased used of social media continues to grow and has become an important part of modern communication (Kane, Alavi, Labianca & Borgatti, 2014, p.275). Consequently, social media technologies have had significant impacts on social behavior, interactions, and collaboration resulting in reliance on Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC).
Rationale or Problem Statement The rapid technological advancements and increased globalization has contributed to more interactions between people from different places. This has resulted in the emergence of social media technologies, which are characterized with the proliferation of various social networking sites for interpersonal communication across national borders. Social media has become a major form of communication for all ages worldwide to an extent that it is rapidly changing social behavior and interactions (Pezzolla, 2013, p.1055).
