Everyone uses e-mail, text, snap chat, twitter and tablets these days, but not everyone knows how to effectively communicate using social media. Effective communication plays a pivotal role in nearly every aspect of both your personal and professional life. Skilled computer mediate communication skills impress friends, family, colleagues and customers, and creates a positive environment, while poor communication causes confusion, frustration, inefficiencies and misinterpretation. This paper will summarize the importance of understanding how to effectively communicate using both verbal and non-verbal communication in the computer mediated environment “email”, and the importance of understanding the culture in which you are communicating in.

The fact remains, the most effective way to communicate is one on one, face to face. However in today’s social media world, the importance of both verbal and nonverbal communication in the digital age is vital to ensure effective computer mediated communication. Within my organization it is important to understand email etiquette within the Department of Defense culture when addressing and typing emails. Within the Subj line there are abstract symbols in which you must be a custom to. For example, if the subject line begins with *R/I that indicates the level of urgency is Routine/Information (meeting minutes). A **P/A would indicate Priority/Action (Data Call) and requires a response within 2-3 days maximum. A ***F/A indicates Flash/Action (Congressional Inquiry) and requires a response within a few hours and backed up with a phone call. Not too often is nonverbal communication or emoticons used within the Department of Defense, I have seen words all capitalized which mean Yelling. Conduct a final review of your email before sending, read from a recipient perspective, and remember, your information could end up anywhere.
