Discuss differences and similarities between the social learning model and the cognitive-behavioral model.
Intro A person who is trying to remain sober has many barriers to overcome. There is a “high rate of relapse during the recovery process” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 261). This is one reason why “more research is being done to address substance abuse relapse” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 261). There are many reasons why a person relapses. Since everyone is individual so is the recovery process. Well look at two models of relapse planning, social learning and the cognitive-behavioral model.
Social Learning Model Social learning theory contends that “behavior is shaped by the stimuli that follow” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 271). …show more content…
206). Both models also assert that substance abuse “is a learned behavior under the functional control of contingent consequences” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 206). They get a “euphoria that is a positive reinforcement or reward and this makes them increase their usage to maintain that effect” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 206). One difference is that cognitive-behavioral models try to “reduce legal consequences instead of just harm reduction like social learning model does” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 271). It also views a “lapse as a way to learn how to change coping methods to prevent another lapse as opposed to the social learning model teaching how to control consumption” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 271).
Conclusion
When a person chooses to take control of their addiction they have several types of therapy that may assist them. Two model of relapse approach this problem in different ways. Some similarities between them include, “that substance abuse is a learned behavior” (Stevens & Smith, pg. 271). One difference is that while one approached harm reduction from a “legal standpoint the cognitive behavioral looks at a lapse in recovery as a teaching moment” (Stevens & Smith, pg.
