I Can’t Get a Signal By nature, humans are born as social creatures always finding groups that share a commonalities and working together, but as some see this as a natural occurrence others see this as social conformity. Some see this as individuals being force to think and believe a certain way due to the dominant belief in society and fear opposition, but others have decided to stand up against this and resist the dominant standards of society. Most of the Amish communities live in the United States, and follow simple, but strict customs and refuse to take oaths, vote, perform military service and refuse to use any sort of modern technology and conveniences, like cars, cellphones, etc. The Amish mode for transportation is by horse and buggy, they do not have any electricity or telephones in their homes. They culturally resist by living a non-technological lifestyle in a technologically advanced based society. The Amish also dress differently compared to today’s society’s standards. For example, the Amish men usually have beards and wear pants with buttons instead of zippers. They don’t even have zippers for their pants because that’s considered modern technology. The Amish live this type of lifestyle due to their religious beliefs. The Amish believe that James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” (https://www.biblegateway.com) The line, "...and to keep oneself from being polluted from the world.", means to stay away from things modern society does, to stay away and shun themselves from society’s standards. The leaders of these Amish communities are the bishops. The bishops set up strict rules of conduct allowed for his district that follow the teachings of Amman, although some bishops are more lenient than others. As you can see, the Amish greatly resist today’s society’s standards just by their way of life and beliefs.
