Johnny and Dally: Characters with Similar Problems yet Different Personalities

How can two characters be so similar yet so different at the same time? The two characters, Johnny and Dally, from the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton have many similarities and many vast differences. Johnny and Dally are similar because they both have abusive parents and both do not have value in life. Despite these similarities, they also have differences such as Johnny follows all the rules and Dally simply loves breaking them, and they both give very Ponyboy very different advice. For instance, Dally never sugar coats anything and Johnny, is sympathetic and tries to care as much as possible. After the rumble Pony was hurt badly and Dally was very upset with him and Johnny for jumping into the church. He then proceeds to tell Pony, “‘ . . . you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt’”(147). Instead of being compassionate Dally told Pony to get tough and not care about others. On the other hand, Johnny cares for Pony and does not want him to be like any other greaser. While on his deathbed Johnny tells Pony, “‘ Stay gold, Ponyboy’”(148). Johnny wants Pony to never get tired of life to treat every experience like a new one. Unlike Dally, Johnny wants Ponyboy to care. Clearly, the advice that Dallas and Johnny give to Ponyboy, makes it obvious that they have different personalities and values. In S.E. Hinton’s novel, two characters Johnny and Dally, have many similarities yet many vast differences. Dally and Johnny, being part of the same group explains their similarities. They both have abusive parents and do not have a lot of value in their lives. And their different personalities and values explain their differences. Johnny hates breaking rules, while Dallas hates following the rules. Also, they give Ponyboy different advice. Johnny and Dallas are two characters who seem identical but have completely opposite
