The relationship between Ponyboy and Johnny is speechless. The fact that they are that close to each other describes it all. In the beginning of the novel, I would describe the friendship of Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade as, “ together, courage, and faith in each other.” Another statement is: has Ponyboy and Johnny always been in a strong relationship? The answer is yes, but the progress of faith in each other from the beginning to the end, was a dramatic change in the level of friendship. The friendship between Pony and Johnny starts with Johnny, Pony, Dally and Two-Bit after the movie theatre. They decide to walk home to waste time but Ponyboy gets home very late. Darry is not happy. Johnny made it into the building in one piece—managing to save all the children before the walls crashed down. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Johnny, the ceiling was getting loose. Ponyboy saw trouble, he quickly rushed over to the church. He saved Johnny just in time as the ceiling collapsed on him. That was one of the bravest things a friend could possibly do. Not only to put that friend in danger, but to put yourself at risk. Johnny ended up being very injured and eventually died from the harsh burns. Pony was very sad that Johnny died, but eventually realized that he had learned a lot from his old friend--Johnny-- he still had a lot of life left in his grasp. The last two words that slipped before Johnny’s mouth was, “stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold.” page, 148, The Outsiders “Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things. not the things you want to learn. Sixteen years on the streets and you can see a lot. But all the wrong sights. Not the sights you want to see.”
