Syria was an important center of trade because it is in the center of many powerful regions as well has a large coastline where many trade routes meet the Mediterranean Sea. Under Islamic rule the consolidation of central Asia brought about the stability necessary for trade, which resulted in an increase in agricultural productivity. This subsequently produced rapid urbanization and growth of industry. All of these factors put together led to the creation of large new markets for trade. The Silk Road was responsible for the spread of Buddhism into central China as well. It first spread to China through the efforts of missionary monks who followed the trade routes between North India and West China. Asia also played an important role because of its different provinces such as Syria, which had a large coastline where many trade routes met the Mediterranean Sea. Scandinavia was a strong example of how a country that is geographically isolated would not be able to urbanize due to the lack of resources that it traded amongst other regions. Without the advancement of the Silk Road, ideas and cultures would not have been able to spread as easily from region to region, which would lead to a lack of development in these civilizations and create an absence of urbanization throughout the ancient
