The Chinese civilization during the Song Dynasty
After the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, a new era in China’s history has started which has gone through an unprecedented growth. In this essay, I will explain the Chinese civilization on the metropolitan web during the Song dynasty, which was during the time period of 960 and 1279. Academic sources are used for information in this essay. The basic tools of communication that are available to them will be clarified. Goods were transferred in wagons, backpacks and wheelbarrows, also on camels and donkeys. This method was used to cross large desserts and Inner Asia. Water transport has always been much more preferred due to being cheaper and faster than going over land. (McNeill and McNeill 123) The South had an advantage with its many waterways. Northern cities were able to take advantage too because of their canals. A lot of cultural traditions originated during the Song dynasty. Between 750 and 110, the population doubled. Advances in agriculture and technological and scientifically inventions were the cause of this growth. Foot binding became popular in all social classes, because it was perceived as a symbol of the Chinese beauty. (Wang 11) Before the Song Dynasty, the Chinese ate wheat, millet and drank wine. During the Song Dynasty, rice and tea became the dominant food and drink as it still is till today. The popularity of Daoism and Buddhism reduced and Neo-Confucian became their dominant philosophy of life, this was needed, because China started to be exposed to more foreign religion and saw a lack of development in their own.(Grousset 78) However, even though the civilization went through a great revolution, the Song military remained weak. The Northern rivals, the Khitans and Jurchens, took over Northern Song in 1127 and in 1279, the Mongols fully defeated the Song in order to control all of China. (Columbia
