A Possible Silent Killer On average, two out of every one thousand people have this medical condition (“Aortic Valve Stenosis”). What is this potentially deadly disorder and who does it affect? This disorder is called Aortic Valve Stenosis and it can affect anyone. Aortic Valve Stenosis, also known as AVS, happens when the aortic valve narrows. The narrowing keeps the valve from operating properly by not allowing the valve to fully open. With the aortic valve not working correctly, it causes extra stress on the valve. Since the heart has extra stress on it, the blood flow is often reduced. The blood that cannot make it through the aorta causes the heart to work harder in order to supply the body with the correct amount of blood that the …show more content…
The restrictions are usually about the kinds of exercise the person can and cannot do. One of the most common restrictions is heavy weightlifting. Sports like hockey and football are not recommended because they require activities during the game that exert the same force as heavy weightlifting. Sometimes the doctor may restrict or tell the patient to limit some of the unhealthy foods that they eat often. Examples of the kinds of foods that could be restricted are foods high in sodium, foods high in fat, and foods that have a high sugar content (“Aortic Valve …show more content…
There are not any medications that will cure this disorder (“Aortic Valve Stenosis”). Sometimes a blood thinner is given so the blood will flow through the valve easier. Most of the time to cure it, the doctor will replace the valve or repair it during surgery. One type of replacement is a mechanical valve. This is a long-lasting valve made of durable materials. When a human or animal donor tissue is used to repair the valve it is called a tissue valve repair or replacement. Sometimes a different valve is extracted from another location in the heart and moved to the aorta to replace the damaged valve. Then the valve that was extracted and moved is replaced with a mechanical valve or a tissue valve replacement. This is known as the Ross procedure. Another very common procedure is called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)/ (TAVA) which is when the doctor perform a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. Balloon Valvuloplasty is also used to repair the valve. Specialists are still developing new and better ways to perform these surgeries and procedures (“Aortic Valve
