Sigmund Freud: Manifest Content, And Latent Content Of The Dreams

Sigmund Freud proposed that the dreams we have show what we want to feel but are too afraid to admit. He used the terms ‘manifest content’ and ‘latent content’. Manifest content can be defined as the remembered story line of the dream. For example, if you had a dream about going to a casino and gambling. The manifest content is remembering that you lost at the table or the machines. Latent content is applying that dream into your unconscious mind to interpret what it means. The gambling may symbolize that you are relying too hard on fate to take you somewhere, and since you were losing your unconscious mind may be trying to tell you that you need to stop relying on fate so heavily. The ideas of manifest and latent content are a way of analyzing your dreams and figuring out a deeper meaning to them. To me this makes sense because I have personally interpreted many of my dreams based on what is happening to me now or what has happened in the past.

Recently, I had a dream that my paying job was to go around to lots of different people and tell them about an app I had created. The app was designed to direct people around the town they lived in, or a town they were traveling to. You can compare the app to ‘Maps’ on iPhone or ‘Google Maps’ on Android phones, but the neat part about it was that it also would send you notifications while you were traveling about places to go watch the sunset, or delicious places near you to eat. If I had not taken the time to write my dream out and then go back a days later to analyze it and look at the fine print I would have never thought of any of the things I did. With my analysis I can now look to make small changes in my life to make my life better. Paying attention to your dreams could really help you in your day to day
