Comparing A Raisin In The Sun And A Dream Deferred By Langston Hughes

Decent Essays
There can be two kinds of dreams. The first being a series of thoughts or images that occur while sleeping. Second, is a desired goal or aspiration for the future. While both can be powerful, a dream that is reality rather than imaginary can be more influential. By being reality it can give one a tangible goal to strive for. In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes the consequences for not following one’s dreams is the dream becoming pointless and regret from never trying to achieve the dream.

Dreams are visual or auditory experiences that our mind creates during a sleeping period. There are two types of dreams, REM dreams and Non REM dreams. REM dreams usually exhibit impossible or bizarre things that could not normally happen in real life, as Non REM dreams are more relatable to everyday life and seem possible to actually happen. (V. Hill, Personal Communication, January 2016).…

Dreaming has made people try to achieve their goals in life. It is better to dream than be realistic in life because you can reach for the stars, and you have a goal set and are determine to complete it. Initially, you don’t settle for average. For example, in the novel, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette has a very challenging life because: her dad’s an alcoholic, her mom takes care of herself than her children, and her living conditions aren’t stable.…

Reality is, more often than not, subjective. There is the universal reality in which all humans participate, however everyone has a different look on reality. As I see it, dreams are reflections of our subjective reality; they are the ideas our subconscious mind forms on the basis of our perspective in the state of being awake. They are often regarded as symbolic, and we trust them more than we would trust a story featuring supernatural events. Nightmares, for example, are reflections of our greatest fears.…

A Dream (Of Mice and Men) A dream is a very powerful thing, especially when you never let go of them. Dreams define who we are and what we want in life. They make us who we are and we should never give up on them. Many people give up on what they want and this leads to a meaningless life.…

What are dreams designed to do? How do we dream? Do they even mean anything? These are questions people may contemplate when they wake in the morning after encountering a series of thoughts, images, and sensations that occurred during their sleep. Every person in the world – big or small, rich or poor – has drifted off and dreamt at some point in their life.…

In past times African American people were discriminated against and segregated, making a lot of people stand up for their rights in different ways. The speech written by Martin Luther King, “I have a dream” and the poem written by Langston Hughes, “Harlem”, both of them talk about the times of the brutality over African American people. The two works are similar because they both talk about African Americans not having the right of freely expressing their dissatisfaction with oppression. However, the two works are different in that one has a message with hope and the other one is without any optimism.…

Question 1 As I reflected on Frankl’s captivatingly written account of the human tragedy of the encampment experience, much of the details given in the book offered just enough details to create various pensive moments. These moments occurred quite often and allowed me to view human suffering in a very different way. After a while, I found myself jotting down notes and personal connections as they occurred in my head and heart. Frankl writes, “[It] is possible to practice the art of living…although suffering is omnipresent“(Frankl, 2006, pg. 44). When I read that line in the text, my perspective shifted to include a new clarity and understanding of life.…

In my opinion, the whole book was based on deferred dreams. In the beginning, Langston Hughes read a poem about what happens to deferred dreams. He asked an essential question, do deferred dreams dry up like a raisin in the sun? Challenging the reader to think what really happens to dreams put off to the side. In the novel, Walter Lee was a huge dreamer.…

Society constantly informs us, of the individuals who beat all of their obstacles to achieve their dreams but what happens to those who don't? Most importantly what happens to the people around them? We often see the positive effects of dreams for example “we choose to go to the moon” written by John F. Kennedy helps us understand how dreams can help us “We choose to go to the moon, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills” In this speech J.F Kennedy explains to us how dreams can be worth it and what dreams can give us, but we never see how dreams can negatively affect people and their loved ones. In “The Necklace” written by Guy de Maupassant…

This makes the reader understand that the concept of deferred dreams is universal, regardless of race, social status, country or age. Another reason towards associating differed dreams with disguise is the fact that it does not depend fully on us to make it come true. For example, around the 1920’s many African Americans surely have dreamed of freedom and equality, however the fact that…

Happiness is a very controversial topic in today’s society. There is a single defined definition, yet many different ways a person can feel it. To everyone in the world, happiness is perceived and defined differently. Human interaction and connection is not necessarily needed to achieve happiness, but is needed to some extent. I believe that happiness is achieved when dreams, personal thoughts, and human relations mix together.…
