Should The Holocaust Be Taught In Schools Essay

Decent Essays
Do you think the Holocaust should be taught in schools? Everyday a teacher has to make this vital decision. The government also has to make the decision whether or not they should require schools to teach this to their students. Many people have different thoughts about this topic, so it becomes a crucial decision for all citizens involved. It is an excellent idea to teach 8th graders about the Holocaust because they will learn about it in a safe environment if schools teach them, they will gain many life lessons from it, and, furthermore, this is the best age to teach them about the Holocaust due to their maturity level.

To understand why teachers should teach it, first you must know what the Holocaust was. The Holocaust was a mass genocide of Jews by the Germans in World War II. Jews would be shipped off in trains to work camps in

A better question is whether or not the teachers feel comfortable teaching this to students. When you are in 8th grade, you have had many experiences and are much more mature than most. As discussed previously, teaching children about the Holocaust might even make them more mature. How can you progress in life if you don’t experience it? Now that we have gone over why we should teach 8th graders about the Holocaust we will go over why it may not be a good idea.

One of the reasons the Holocaust has not been taught in the past is because the government is scared of fighting what the people teach their children. Recently in the UK, Muslim children are being offended by the teachings of the Holocaust. Some Muslims there believe that the Holocaust never happened. They are in denial, and this makes it extremely hard for the UK to teach 8th graders about the Holocaust. Even though some people may be offended by the topic, their denial is even more reason to teach people about the Holocaust so they know the

We have been learning about the Holocaust and World War 2 for many years as part of our social studies curriculum. Most of us probably, and I hope, know that this was a bad thing for Hitler to do and be a part of. You always feel more empathy and sadness when you actually read documentaries about people that have experienced this terrible time. The story Night by Elie Wiesel shares her personal experiences of being kicked out of her hometown and being transported to the camps, what happened at the camps and the impact it had on her, and how there was so much death going on and barely anybody survived. The Holocaust was a tragic time in our past that many people would like to forget. Many people who lived through it have now passed away, but there are still a few survivors left in the world. Josiane Traum was living with her family at the time of the Holocaust in Belgium and was only three when the Nazi’s began to invade. After the Nazi invaded everyone needed an ID card that said your religion on it. Traum’s mother put her into a convent to avoid capture by the Nazi’s, but a little while after being put into the convent Traum’s mother and father were captured by the Nazi.…

The Holocaust is a subject that is overlooked, misunderstood, and disregarded. Students do get taught about it in school, but it generally becomes a subject that people avoid discussing because they don’t want to offend someone. It soon became a subject that was too daunting and too terrifying to be thought of. People can’t even try to fathom the kind of evil it must take to degrade humans the way the Nazis did during the war, that they just stopped thinking about it all together. Some people even convinced themselves that the Holocaust never happened.…

Should schools teach about the Holocaust? I absolutely think that schools should teach about the Holocaust because people need to know what happened and how millions of Jews died. 1939-1945 was a very difficult and heartbreaking time for non German people, mostly Jewish people. Hitler thought Germans were superior, if someone didn’t have blue eyes, blond hair, and weren’t German, Germans wanted to get rid of them. Jewish people were forced out of their homes and taken to camps and or the ghetto.…

The objective of teaching any type of subject is for the student to think critically and for them to be curious. The Holocaust is prime candidate for students to critically think through complex life issues since kids will be need to know about these issues later in life. “The Holocaust provides one of the most effective subjects for examining basic moral issues” ("Why Teach about the Holocaust?"). It is right to teach the kids about the Holocaust now because when they grow up they will be used to matters like killing, racism, and Anti Semitism. As a result teaching the Holocaust to younger people is better now than later.…

Why should future generations know about the holocaust? The Holocaust was an unquestionable powerful event that all started with Hitler and the Nazis in Germany. Not only German Jews but all Jews were killed just because Hitler thought they didn’t match the characteristics of a natural born German Jew. This was such a tragic event that it should be widely known by all generations. People and children of younger generations should all be aware that this happened in order to stop future events such as the Holocaust to happen again.…

Today, denial has largely been relegated to fringehate groups, neo-Nazis, and anti-Semites. The Nizkor Project has an entire section of its websitedevoted to the statements of the National Socialist White People’s Party on denial. Their leader,Harold Covington, is quoted from a 1996 bulletin paraphrasing leading critic of Holocaust denialDeborah Lipstadt: “The real purpose of Holocaust revisionism is to make National Socialism anacceptable political alternative again,” Covington summarizes. For example, it has been debated whether or not events such as the Holocaust should be taught to students. It is disturbing to know that educators are trying to avoid informing students about the past. Whether the topic is positive or negative, all students should have the right to learn about their nation’s history. An event like the Holocaust may disturb younger students, so instead of completely avoiding the topic, it should be taught to a more mature group of students. Learning about events like this not only helps students understand the past, but also informs them on the importance of accepting others.…

There are many reasons as to why it is vital that the lessons we have learned from the Holocaust be passed on to new generations. It’s honestly so insane that one human being was responsible for such a violent act. One human being had the power to kill over thousands of people. One human being had the heart and soul so cold enough to be able to plan and succeed in doing such an inhumane act. The learning and understanding of this barbarous era can really show people that a human being was and is capable of doing such an inhumane act, that then and even now racism still exists, and that we couldn’t and still cannot solve a situation if we just choose to be bystanders and keep silent.…
