Should The Drinking Age Be Lowered To 18

For the past few years, the United States’ has had a long and hard debate about what age is a person old enough to control their own alcohol intake. All of these debates have led to the legal drinking age to be set at 21. This current law is a perfect example of a rule with unrealistic expectations and unintended consequences. The ongoing policy that the United States has in effect punishes the youth who consume alcohol when they are younger than 21 years of age. Young adults are going to drink under the legal age, so why should the United States not lower the drinking age to 18? The legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 because at age 18 you are considered an adult and mature enough to make the right decisions.

Lots of 18 year olds are drinking and while some do it safely, others do not. More and more States are wanting to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18 but require them to be with a parent or guardian that is 21 or older and they would not be allowed to have drinks with high levels of alcohol (Paoletta). The number of States that are realizing that the 21 year old drinking law is not doing what it was meant to do is rising. Their solution, is to lower the drinking age so that all 18 year olds can drink safely with the supervision of a more mature and experienced drinker. Another initiative out there is to allow 18 year olds to consume alcohol but not purchase it because they are still too young ("This State Might Lower the Drinking Age to 18"). This would allow teenagers to consume alcohol but force them to have it in the safety of their homes. If they are allowed to go and fight in a war, then they can handle having a drink, but they are still too young to be purchasing alcohol. If the 18 year olds cannot purchase alcohol, they would have to go to their parents, or another mature adult who can purchase alcohol, to get some which would result in those 18 year olds to drink in the safety of their homes with their parents present.
