English In the United States of America at the age of eighteen you are officially an adult and are able to do everything that you are ever legally going to be able to do, except for one, buy or consume alcohol. If an eighteen year old is able to lay their life down for their country then why shouldn’t they be able to drink a beer? The minimum legal drinking age or (MLDA) of twenty one encourages dangerous drinking habits. Over seventy percent of eighteen year olds admit to consuming alcohol in the past month alone. Forty-five states already have exceptions where people under the age of twenty-one can legally consume alcohol. These college students are going to parties given by older students and drinking unhealthy amounts of alcohol, many times even drinking enough to cause death. These types of parties are dangerous, but happen often on most college campuses across the United States. Lowering the drinking age would allow these college students an opportunity to drink legally in restaurants or college bars. This would potentially lower their risk of binge drinking. Many eighteen to twenty year olds find drinking alcohol an enjoyable and relaxing activity to do with family and friends. Denying them this right is not fair. They find drinking to be a leisure activity that is being taken away from them by this law. Lowering the drinking age would allow those in this age group to enjoy an alcoholic beverage in a public place without running a risk of getting in trouble with law enforcement. It’s a right that they should have as adults living in a free county. In conclusion, adults age eighteen to twenty are given all other adult rights, so this should be a right as well.
