Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Drinking Age To 18

I really think the drinking age should be lowered to the age of eighteen. If you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. For three main reasons. One, teenagers are going to drink alcohol anyway so we might as well legalize it. Two, people are allowed to vote and fight for our country in the military yet they aren 't allowed to even drink alcohol. So they can go overseas and fight ISIS but wouldn 't be allowed to drink a beer while doing it. Finally, with all the time the police spend arresting underage drinkers they could use that time, energy, and money to focus on more pressing issues like murders and drugs. All of these reasons lead to the conclusion that lowering the drinking age would result in a more positive environment for young people and will help strengthen the government. My main opinion on the drinking age is that it should really be lowered. It makes sense for it to be 18 years old. Voting age is 18, lottery tickets are allowed to be purchased at age 18, and the military accepts people at 18. These all add up to one common age. 18. Alcohol is responsible for less deaths every year than smoking. If …show more content…
Let 's start with the cons. The first con is that yes, legally more people would be drinking. We all know that drinking can damage your body and can cause permanent harm to you and in some cases can even kill you (alcohol rehab). Another con is that the government would have to put more money into funding programs or some other way to monitor the extra people drinking. Another con is that this could lead to more cases of drunk driving. In 2014 almost 10,000 people died because of drunk driving (CDC). With an extra window of 3 years and those three years being notorious for being irresponsible this could lead to a large and noticeable increase in drunk driving accidents and deaths. And no matter how bad I want the drinking age lowered I don’t want people to die because of

Drinking alcohol is popular among most adults although it is not legal in every state to drink as soon as the proclaimed age of adulthood is reached. Personally I believe that the age should be lowered because upon turning eighteen years old so many new laws and regulations apply such as the right to vote and being able to serve in the military. Increasing the age has created more cases of underage drinking and illegal sales of alcohol to minors.…

The sooner young adults begin consuming alcohol, the larger the risk of obtaining long-term effects and brain damage. For these reasons, I am certain that keeping the legal drinking age at 21 is in the best interest of all teenagers and young adults. Although there are still bound to be issues with underage drinking, teens are less likely to participate in illegal activities if they believe they could potentially get caught and punished. Also, the drinking age has been set at 21 among most states in the U.S. and has proven to be more beneficial in preventing alcohol related accidents all over the world. Changing the age will just create more issues and will more than likely result in more fatalities than it already…

If society trust them to vote, fight in wars, and what ever else, then it is only right that this group be allowed to drink at 18. It is important that Americans address their concerns and take a lesson from countries around the globe such as, European countries, where the drinking age is mainly eighteen and the system is doing well. According to the World Health Organization, in Europe one out of ten drinking occasions results in intoxication. On the other hand, when compared to the United States, the numbers rose to five out of ten. Of course, rising the drinking age from eighteen to twenty one may have had some minor successes, like getting fewer young people to drink, but it has also resulted in dangerous behaviors. In my opinion, lowering the drinking age to eighteen is not going to increase or decrease the amount of alcohol an under age American drinks; however, it may save a life by encouraging safer drinking habits. Changing the drinking age will not be easy but by writing your congressmen and expressing your concern it is a…

I personally think that the minimum legal drinking age should remain at twenty-one. When a person turns twenty-one they are looking forward to being able to legally drink and buy alcohol when they want to. On a person’s sixteenth birthday they look forward to getting their license, on their eighteenth they are finally legal, and on their twenty-first they can finally drink legally. Turning twenty-one is just another milestone in a person’s life and the drinking age shouldn’t be lowered when consuming alcohol legally goes with that particular milestone. I also think that the minimum legal drinking age shouldn’t be lowered because it is a safety hazard and should be taken seriously. A person should wait until they are older to drink because it still things they need to learn about alcohol and how it affects your body and harm you if not consumed properly. Drinking alcohol alters your mind and ability to function correctly. There will be some people for lowering the minimum legal drinking age and some people against lowering it. Deciding on whether the minimum legal drinking age should be lowered should include all the good and the bad effects that come along with it and should be taken seriously. Until the day that the minimum legal drinking age is lowered, we will be stuck with the law that a person must be twenty-one to consume…
