Should someone be put in jail for murder? Even if is it murder for a reason that is good? Even though there was a reason for the murder to happen, should the murderer be guilty and spend the rest of his life in jail? In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton, a farmer, murdered his best friend and closest companion, Lennie Small, another farmer, that is mentally ill. This was after Lennie killed Curley’s wife, who was the wife of the son of the boss of the farm that they were working on. George and Lennie were best friends who were always traveling around, because they could not stay at one farm due to the fact that Lennie always gets into trouble because he had a mind like a child’s. The question is, though, was it for …show more content…
Lennie and George were best friends and had such a strong friendship. Even in the worst of situations, best friends would never harm each other. Slim was telling George about the consequences of what could happen when Lennie was found, “If we could keep Curley in, we might. But Curley's gonna want to shoot 'im. Curley's still mad about his hand. An' s'pose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't no good, George.” (97). If Lennie was found, Curley had made it clear that he would shoot Lennie’s guts out, because Lennie killed his wife. Even if Curley didn’t end up killing Lennie, he would have ended up going to a detention facility for the mentally ill, or some other place where Lennie would not be deemed dangerous to the outside world. George made the decision himself, based on what Slim told him, and since he knew what was best for Lennie because of their strong friendship. He ultimately killed Lennie so that Lennie would not have to suffer once caught. Another quote that supports this reason is the few moments before George killed his best friend, “ George raised the gun and his hand shook, and he dropped his hand to the ground again.” (105). George stole Carlson’s, another farmer’s, Luger, which was a gun, to use to kill Lennie. He claimed that Lennie took it to make Lennie sound dangerous, …show more content…

I, personally, don’t think George was justified in killing Lennie, but some of the evidence from the text proves otherwise. Most people saw Lennie as a child and not a grown man, which is understandable, and that may be one reason why George wanted to get rid of him. Many times he was called a child or people would say he acted like one. For example, when Lennie brought the puppy in the bunkhouse and George made him take it back, Slim said, “He’s jes’ like a kid, ain’t he.” Lennie was constantly in trouble which made it hard for George to keep a job for long.…

To ask whether an action is right or wrong, and to answer with one of the two simple, banal choices, is to ignore the rich and enlightening internal quandaries that arise when one must consider morals and ethics. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, dilemmas of these sort present themselves often, particularly when George makes the decision to shoot his companion, Lennie, in order to spare him great pain and suffering. It would be unfair to simply call George’s actions ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, as in order to critically examine them and deem them moral or otherwise one must examine them from unbiased points of view; look at motives and consequences, a process through which Immanuel Kant would esteem George’s actions wrong, John Stuart…
