If given a choice, it is hard to imagine that most or even many teenagers would choose to wear uniforms. One school might require a solid button-down shirt with ties for boys, a pleated or solid color skirt and blazer adorned with the school’s logo. During this time, public and private schools have debated whether students should wear school uniforms. There are people who think that uniforms should be mandatory. On the other hand, there are a few who disagree and believe that kids should have the freedom to choose what they want to wear to school and uniforms take away the right of self-expression. Uniforms should be required in public schools because school uniforms are more cost-effective, ensure equality, and it can improve student’s performance.
First and foremost, school uniforms are more cost/time effective. Parents can reduce their financial burden when their child is limited to wearing one simple outfit every day, with only slight adjustments. An Aug. 20, 2015 study done by the United Kingdom found that uniforms cost parents around $128.79 per outfit, while schools with no dress code averaged $165.79. Also a national 2013 survey of 517 US school leaders found that 94% of those surveyed stated “one of the main benefits to parents is that school uniforms are more cost-effective than regular apparel,” and 77% estimated that the cost for uniforms per child was around $150 or less.
