Have you ever seen those cute little Whales doing tricks at places like seaworld? Has it ever crossed your mind that these whale could be hurting in that show bizz life? The thing is these creatures are way to smart, large, and very complex to be put in a small environment. The injuries that some people know of are from the trainers, but some don't even hear about the animal's injuries. Orcas should not be in captivity because they get injured, don't have enough room to swim, and don't live as long as they would in the wild.
Orcas get hurt when they are kept in captivity. A whale named Tilikum was judged by lots of people because he killed a trainer . Before that whenever Tilikum didn't do a trick correctly he and his tank mates were not fed. This created them to get hungry and create tension. This tension was released by the whales fighting. Tilikum had teeth being rake down his body from the other whales because they were hungry. That is just unacceptable because they get hurt because they didn't do a trick right? Not ok. Sometimes you will see orcas with drilled teeth and that's because whenever a orca is bored or hungry they chew on the metal bars that hurts their teeth. Tilikum and the other whales were treated horribly . They were starved if they didn't do the right thing. The owners thought the orcas would learn from their mistakes but they would only take their aggression out on the other whales. The whales were kept in a small dark floating metal box in the ocean all night with all the whales squeezed in. In the morning the orcas would have scratch wounds on them because they would fight during the night.…

Also with the help of CNN, a news station that many people trust, airing the documentary helps make it more plausible with the information being shown. In one of the many interviews being bared throughout the documentary to show credible information how the whales are treated, they interviewed former Director of Sealand, Steve Huxter. Huxter admitted to the terrible abuse the whales in his park faced. While training their new orca Tilikum, they would pair him with a trained orca and if Tilikum did not do what he was told then both whales would be punished. Deprived of food to keep them hungry, the trained orca became frustrated with Tilikum and would rake him with his teeth as payback.…

However, if Tilikum messed up both whales would be punished. This caused the older whale to become frustrated with Tilikum, and he retaliated by raking him with his teeth. Also, Tilikum was placed in the tank with female orcas and they also raked him. In the evenings the orcas were locked up in a small area for the night, and eventually they were only fed once they were locked up. This caused Tilikum to get frustrated and become aggressive which was shown in the first attack when Tilikum killed Keltie Byrne.…

Orcas in Captivity vs. Orcas in the Wild The roar of the crowd, the splash of cool water, and the spectacular stunts that are performed by the orca and his trainer may leave you speechless. What some people don't think about is what the effects are of having orcas in captivity versus keeping them in the wild. Some similarities may include things like the diet and nutrition in the wild and captivity. On the other hand, things like their lifespan, the posture of their dorsal fin, and being torn away from their family are just a few differences.…

One of the most noteworthy incidents at SeaWorld involving their animals was in 2010, when an orca whale named Tilikum killed his trainer, Dawn, after a show. Tilikum was captured in the waters off of Iceland in 1983. He was separated from his family and the rest of his pod, (pathos) and he was sold to a marine park called Sea Land. During his time at Sea Land he was starved as a training technique, and he was repeatedly attacked by the two other orcas in his pen (pathos). Tilikum was forced to perform for long hours, and he developed stomach ulcers from stress and exhaustion.…

Those were just a couple of unfortunate attacks that served as a result of the forced confinement, anger, and emotional stress. All of these calamitous incidents could easily have been avoided if these animals were kept in their rightful homes, the wild. Which brings me to my next point. In the wild orcas have a much longer life expectancy than of those kept in captivity.…

First, these animals have families that they are deeply connected to. Then all of sudden they are ripped from that connection and put with unknown orcas (“10 Things You Didn’t Know About SeaWorld”). We view the kidnapping of a human as one of the ultimate crimes, something that only the scum of the Earth would ever think of doing. Yet we condone the act of taking these Orcas away from their families. Second, one of the men involved in the kidnapping of the whales in the documentary described it as one of the hardest things he had ever had to do.…

This evidence goes to show the differences in living conditions of captivity versus the wild, and the cause of this aggressive behavior and attacks can be linked together because of one thing, captivity. In captivity, many of the whales suffer from poor physical and mental health. The tanks that these whales are being forced to live in are only twice their size, causing the animals swim in small circles or float aimlessly, compared to traveling an easy 50 to 100 miles per day in the wild. When these animals are put in an environment like this they tend to get uninterested and unmotivated in the things that are around…

Many of the orcas have chewed the metal bars of their tanks due to stress. This wears down their teeth, which will only worsen. The dental pulp, the living tissue of their teeth, is exposed and can attract germs, which may lead to heart problems, pneumonia, sepsis, and death. Also, Dr. Ginneken says that less than 1% of orcas in the wild have collapsed dorsal fins, but in captivity, all male orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, due to stress and the lack of space. Collapsed dorsal fins are caused by the orca slowly ‘circle-swimming’, instead of straight and fast like they would in the wild.…

(“SeaWorld of Hurt”). Since the orcas break their teeth, it causes the tanks to be a hazard. Tilikum’s teeth are worn down to the nubs from gnawing on the metal bars. The tanks at SeaWorld are also a hazard to the trainers. According to PETA, “…areas surrounding the orca performance tank were in disrepair and contained cracked and crumbling concrete and rusty beams that could pose a threat to the health and safety of both the animals and workers.”…

With aggression becoming one of the reoccurring factors, experts believe an orca can develop violent or psychotic behavior when in captivity (Chen and Marshall). Orcas have become emotionally destroyed and are ticking time bombs that eventually explode. There have been over seventy occasions when an orca acted out on a trainer. A few incidents of when an orca acted out were when Orky crushed John Sillick while he was riding another killer whale or when Orkid pulled Tamari into the whale tank. Ken Peters was one of the lucky trainers at SeaWorld.…

The documentary Blackfish brings to the public attention the aggressive behaviors displayed by killer whales in captivity. In particular, they focus on an orca by the name of Tilikum held in captivity, by Sealand and later SeaWorld, for close to three decades. Tilikum has caused the death of three people, during his time in captivity--- the most recent being that of Dawn Brancheau, an expert trainer for SeaWorld Orlando. Dawn’s death has sparked increased controversy for the popular entertainment park, most of it revolves around the conditions that the orcas live in.…
