There has long been immense controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana, due to always being taught that marijuana is a drug of abuse. A number of states have already made the leap into marijuana legalization, but many sit back still most likely due to the fact marijuana is currently a forbidden medication in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Even though medicinal marijuana is considered a drug of abuse, medicinal marijuana should be legalized due to its various medical uses, the extravagant profit to be made, and the dramatic impact it would have on the Black Market drug trafficking area.
Firstly, medicinal marijuana has many useful medical qualities that would help to classify it as a medicine. With many HIV or cancer patients, their treatment programs cause them to have loss of energy, loss of appetite, nausea, etc. But with the use of marijuana along with those treatment programs, many find relief to many of those common side effects of treatments or the disease itself. Many people have testimonies, including the Co-Director of the Kaiser-Permanente Northern California Ethics Department, Kate Scannell, M.D. stating “From working with AIDS and cancer patients… Cure vomiting and curtail down-to-the-bone weight loss.” Even some experimental results, “Patients were randomly assigned to smoke cannabis… the finding are comparable to oral drugs used for chronic neuropathic pains.” Along with medicinal uses for HIV or cancer patients, it also can be used to…
