Every year hundreds of thousands of people die from smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes cause more than 480,000 deaths per year (Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking). Cigarettes ruin slowly but surely the lives of numerous smokers and even nonsmokers. Cigarettes should be illegal because of the products in cigarettes, the damages they cause to the human body, the negative effects they have on pregnancy, how addictive they are, and how they affect nonsmokers. With the banishing of cigarettes the world would be a much healthier and safer place for everyone.
One reason why cigarettes should be illegal is because of the harmful substances in cigarettes. The majority of people who smoke cigarettes aren’t even aware of what they’re smoking. Most people fail to actually take a moment and read the concoctions used to make cigarettes. Cigarettes have fifty one ingredients that are carcinogenic (The Dangers of Smoking Cigarettes for Smokers). Cigarettes are made up of hundreds of thousands of ingredients. The most dangerous ingredients in cigarettes that people need to worry about are tobacco, tar, nicotine, and arsenic (What’s in a Cigarette?). Every ingredient in a cigarette has a main use for something and is something everyone knows but may not recognize due to the name.
