Should Animals be Kept in Zoos? Ken Norris, director of science at the Zoological Society of London provides a look at the animal population, “If half the animals died in London zoo next week it would be front page news. But that is happening in the great outdoors” (“Half-Empty”). This quote brings into question zoos. What are zoos? What do they do? Should animals be kept in zoos!? Zoos in general are establishments that maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public. The question, Should animals be kept in zoos? has two main sides: yes and no. The question seems like it would be easy, with two answers, but in reality it is not. Wild animals are kept in zoos and the decision to be made is whether or not they should stay in them. Although zoos can help wild animals through education, funding, and even breeding, they may be harmful to wild animals due to the fact that they are kept in enclosures for most of their lives. Supporters back up their opinions with arguments that zoos and other similar science buildings can rescue, preserve and maintain endangered animal species. Zoos and aquariums can provide necessary research and funding for activities like research, They can also provide important current education to mass quantities of people sparking a need for change in some.
