In recent years, abortion has become a common thing in America. 21% of women who are getting abortions feel that they are not ready to take on the responsibility of taking care baby (Abortions). Another 21% feel as if they have insufficient finances to provide the child with its necessary needs (Abortions). There are about 1.21 million abortions that happen in America each year (Abortions). Despite the epic increase of abortion rates throughout the years, there are noble standards and values of a society that are of a bigger concern. The question of whether or not abortion should be illegal has plagued the world for centuries. Abortions should be illegal because it is terminating the life of an unborn baby, it can jeopardize the mother 's …show more content…
Unsafe abortions are performed by an unlicensed individual, who does not have the necessary skills to meet the required medical standards. The unskilled provider may be in an unsanitary location and use unsanitary equipment, which can cause infections in the uterus. A woman 's uterus may become damaged, resulting in complications in later pregnancies, and may require a hysterectomy. Unsafe abortion methods that some women have turned to, thus, resulting in self-harm. These may include drinking toxic fluids such as bleach. Inflicting direct injury to the vagina, or inserting foreign objects such as coat hangers into the uterus (Haddad). It is also the leading cause of maternal mortality in many countries where abortion remains unsafe (Haddad). Other women who have had at least one or more abortions are 4.92 times at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer (Elliot Institute). Some women may have an increased risk of developing a life-threatening condition called placenta previa. This can be detrimental to both the mother and the child. This condition can cause fetal malformation, prenatal death, and excessive bleeding during labor (Elliot Institute). According to a World Health Organization Report in 2003, every 8 minutes, a woman in a developing nation will die of complications in relation to unsafe abortions (Haddad). Due to these complications, women have experienced hemorrhaging, infections, genital trauma, internal organ injury, and loss of productivity, all resulting in death (Haddad).
