Close your eyes and imagine a place where men and women are treated equally, one where everyone is in charge of their own bodies and no one could threaten that. You probably are not imagining the U.S. given that people are currently having to fight for these rights. This world shouldn’t have to live in your imagination, it should be the one you wake up to everyday. Being that the federal government has turned primarily republican this year, there is a lot of talk about making abortions illegal. There are many reasons abortions should remain legal in the U.S. As decided by the Supreme Court in 1973, abortion should remain a “fundamental right” and be accessible to all women.
History has shown us that abortions will happen no matter what. Legal or not, women will still find ways to have an abortion. When people have no choice other than getting a “back alley” abortion, they face the threat of many possible complications. Various methods women have been forced to use according to Jezbel.com, include: “hitting her stomach with a brickbat… consuming ergot, a fungus… probing herself with a knitting needle or the infamous hanger”. The alternative options women are faced with can cause infections, permanent injury, and even death. People will not stop having sex, therefore, there will continue to be unwanted

Since people are in charge of their own body, they should have the choice whether or not a baby comes out of it. If they get pregnant and decide it’s best for them not to have that baby, then it is their right to get an abortion and not have it. There are many reasons someone might not want to have a baby at a certain point in their life. They’re not financially stable, “too young”, not in a steady environment, ect.
