First, to be able to understand the effects, and addiction it's important to understand how it works. When you are given the alcohol you first put it into your system by ingesting it through the mouth. Once it has been swallowed it is taken into the stomach. Soon after it is taken into your stomach, it is absorbed straight into your bloodstream. Because it has been absorbed into your bloodstream it is carried around the body and is taken to your brain. There it is has its effects.
Now onto the short term effects of drinking. Alcohol is used as a depressant drug for the brain. Only some of the effects of drinking only last up to a couple of hours.
