The branch of literature that deals with human responses to the levels of science, technology, and artificial intelligence is known as Science Fiction. Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut are two well-known authors whose stories commonly revolve around this literary genre. Simply stated, all science fiction stories contain elements that imply a warning or message for its reader. Within all three of the science fiction related texts, “The Pedestrian,” Fahrenheit 451, and “The Big Trip Up Yonder,” the authors reinforce that increased advancements in technology can lead to a society based on loneliness and isolation.…
The Cosmopolitan canopy is written by Elijah Anderson, and is about race and ethnic relations. In this novel, Elijah Anderson explains how the “canopies” that he explores in contemporary Philadelphia support pluralistic embrace of social difference most readily. Over the span of an astounding thirty years of observation, Anderson attempts to convey an image of how people “live race”, in ways that challenge old form`s of inequality. This book relates to Racial and Ethnic relations because it shows what racial and ethnic groups such as African-Americans dealt with during this time in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Anderson describes spaces in the city where people characterized by wide a range of social differences interact in a familiar way on neutral…
In Flemings City of Rhetoric, he attempts to explain how the geographic landscape impacts and influences us to shape our political beliefs and who we are as people. Fleming first focuses on the ways political ideology developed and how those ideologies effect our relationships. Our political beliefs “group” us together (Fleming, 22). It makes sense. Many of the friend’s people make have similar ideologies, beliefs, values, and morals.…
Babies tend to grow up and act like their parents, and become accustomed to their surroundings both negatively and positively. They only know the world through their parents, friends, and community. What is seen and heard in everyday lives becomes the norm. In the book The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates, written by Wes Moore, the author examines where the Other Wes Moore went wrong and where the Author Wes Moore went right.…

The book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, questions how two extremely similar lives have completely opposite stories. The author and the other Wes Moore grew up in the same community. One became an accomplished author, while the other ended up in prison. At what point did their paths diverge? Do we turn into “products of our environment?”…
In his book “Code of the Street”, Elijah Anderson presents the term oppositional culture. In the final chapter and conclusion, Anderson shares the story of two men, John Turner and Robert, both raised and affected by oppositional culture. In this essay I will compare and contrast the ways in which Anderson uses the men to illustrate this concept, and explain their life trajectories. I will prove that while John Turner and Robert show examples of oppositional culture in the path of their lives, the two eventually differ at the conclusion of their encounters with Anderson. To prove this, I will begin by defining oppositional culture and its relation to African American culture.…
In the short story, The Destructors, Trevor is alienated from the community in which he grew up in when his family loses their social status, “his father, a former architect and present clerk, had “come down in the world” and that his mother considered herself better than the neighbors” (Greene, p.1). This move to Wormsley Commons and the related unexplained financial loss contributes to T.’s lost innocence and alienation from a life he once knew as well as alienation among the ‘gang’ he now associates with. T. has the opportunity, the experience of being able to visit Old Misery’s home, but as all the boys don’t have an experience with beauty in the world and instead are experienced with war, "It was the word “beautiful” that worried him—that…
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a five stage model prioritizing the different psychological and physical necessities, lists “Relationships and Belonging” as an individual’s third most vital need. It states that a person cannot be fulfilled in their life without having intimate relationships. When examining literature this theme becomes especially prevalent; several stories focus on how the loss of community damages a person’s livelihood. For example, this is exhibited in “The Story of Green-Blanket Feet” by Humishima and A Narrative of Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson by Mary Rowlandson. In these stories, through the protagonists’ mourning for their people and yearning for a sense of belonging, it becomes evident that humans require…
Growing up in Mendocino; a village nestled between the colossal California redwoods and the frigid Pacific, a strong sense of community was instilled in my values from a young age. With the paucity of industrial goods and services, I was taught to share and contribute to our hometown. As much as the rustic natural terrain made an impact on me, It was the people of Mendocino who truly shaped who I am today. Warmth, belongingness, and compassion were emitted from every townsman. My favorite example of our resiliency is how we supported one of our fallen residents.…
There is this man who hired a young warlock named Elias and he is getting paid by the man who hired him to summon a demon named Agramon. After the young warlock Elias had created the pentagram, he starts to chant in a demonic language while walking around the pentagram. Then the pentagram bursts up into flames and Agramon starts to take form. As they start to take form, Elias starts to chant more quickly and traces delicate outlines in the air with his webbed hands and blue fire crackles when his hands pass. The man couldn’t speak the warlock language, Chthonian, with any fluency but the man knew enough that he was able to recognize Elias’ chant.…
A community environment serves an important function in shaping our personal development and belief system. The community an individual grows up in says a lot about that individual as a person. With strengths, comes weaknesses and every community differs in many ways. The community I grew up in may differ from the community others lived in, and that’s what makes us all unique and different from one another. No matter if you live on Grand View Drive or you live on the south side of Chicago each community has its different problems, and just because someone may live in a different neighborhood than you doesn’t mean you are complete polar opposites it just means you experience obstacles differently in your daily routine and that is completely…
Scott Brown, a columnist and theater critic, in his essay “Facebook Friendonomics,” argues that the interconnectedness of people through social media has disrupted the natural process of friendship. He supports the claim by first referencing personal experience with Facebook to demonstrate his understanding of friendship dynamics within social media, incorporating humor with unexpected comparisons and analogies, and finally directly asserting his claim by clearly listing his three grievances against social media. Brown’s purpose is to argue that friendships should decay naturally rather than be unnecessarily perpetuated by a connection through social media in order to encourage people to explore relationships without relying on superficial…
Alienation has always been a very common thing throughout history and it is difficult to understand the struggles or feelings that outsiders go through. Christina Perri is known for her emotional songs about love, fear, being human and so on, but Sad Song particularly explains how it feels to be an outsider. Sad Song and Saul from Indian Horse both deal with alienation and they both show how words and actions can make someone feel weak and hopeless. Also, being far away from your loved ones can cause you to feel alone and finally it shows that eventually they start to believe the negative things being said or done to them. The novel, Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese and the Sad Song by Christina Perri both reveal the different struggles and…
