Personal Narrative: Big Al

Growing up in Mendocino; a village nestled between the colossal California redwoods and the frigid Pacific, a strong sense of community was instilled in my values from a young age. With the paucity of industrial goods and services, I was taught to share and contribute to our hometown. As much as the rustic natural terrain made an impact on me, It was the people of Mendocino who truly shaped who I am today. Warmth, belongingness, and compassion were emitted from every townsman. My favorite example of our resiliency is how we supported one of our fallen residents. Big Al had been in Mendocino for 30 or more years, and lived between beach bluffs, and the main street sidewalk. Big Al was a gentle giant adorned with dreadlocks and tarnished clothing,

“Killing the Big One” It was just any ordinary day in January and deer season was in full swing. We had been hunting hard all season and I was still yet to get my first ever deer. I was being patient though and not trying to rush things because even at the sight of deer my heart would start pounding out of my chest! My dad would always remind me “You just have to breath and stay calm then aim at the front shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”…

There was, however, a third option that many Mexicans have and currently are taking upon themselves and their families and that is to immigrate to the U.S. for a chance of a better, safer life. Of course, a new start in the U.S. does not mean life would become easier. Because of their lack of formal education, the refugees and immigrants fleeing from Mexico – from the time of the Revolution to the third quarter of the century – mostly found work in the only thing they knew: farming. Ernest Calderon, of Mexican ancestry, describes his time as a migrant farmer in his youth where one would be “pretty lucky” if an independent Anglo farmer had lodgings for migrants farmers, often “sweeping out a chicken coop” for a “livable” place to sleep.…

For example, in response to volunteer inquiries about supplies needed, “we requested a couple of chainsaws to help clear trees from vital roadways. The next day we had 14 brand new saws, complete with extra chains, fuel and oil, and three days after that we had upward of 30.” What one shall ask for, one shall receive seems to be the theme of Rockport now. All the responders had to do was simply state their needs and in no time at all they were taken care of. The specific example of instances where the community helped, without hopes for anything in return, supports Mackay’s analysis of the community pushing for the welfare of all in this tragedy.…

It was a warm spring afternoon on April 26th 2015, around 5 pm. I was 13 at my 3rd all star district championship game, playing one of the best teams in our league. Nestled in the pines, under the hot scorching sun, I was on the dirt stained pitching mound. As I wiped the sweat from my brow I look up as Hunter walks up to the plate. Hunter was a good friend of mine who showed me the curve ball at baseball practice the following season before.…

Even though I do not remember many things from my childhood, I remember the moment when I met Melvin Miller very clearly. I was only five, and when I walked up to him for the first time I had no clue he would change my life forever. My first moment with Melvin was watching him lay tile. I watched as he very eloquently placed each piece of porcelain and grout on the floor in a way that I had never seen before. I was immediately captivated.…

As you drive to work, walk to class, or bustle through busy streets, do you ever take the time to stop and look what is around you? Do you notice the older man that stands on the corner of the street wearing a blue and red cap, wrapped in a blanket because he has no winter coat? Perhaps you give a pity induced smile and pass by without noticing that his cap reads “Proud to be a U.S. Veteran”. Each day most Americans, including myself, fail to realize that nearly a quarter of our homeless citizens are U.S. veterans. Unfortunately, homelessness in our veterans has become a calamity nationwide; with high homeless, depression, and suicide rates, our heroes are not living the “American Dream” they fought for during their years of service.…

I can remember like it was yesterday, when the championship game was on the line. Sweat dripping from my body likes wet towels being drench by hand. Fans’ shouting from both sides of the stands as the game is continuing on. The only thing that’s running through my mind is scoring the winning touchdown and all the fans celebrating with my team and I. Before the Quarterback snaps the ball, I took a deep breath as if it would have been my last and nod my head. The ball shoves into the Quarterback hand and everybody collide into each other like eighteen wheelers.…

I am currently a baseball player for Lower Columbia College where I am also pursuing a general education AA with the expectation of transferring to a four-year college or university in fall of 2016. I signed with the Red Devils in 2014 while still in high school, receiving a scholarship to play for them during my college freshman and sophomore years. Although I originally planned on majoring in education to teach math and science at the middle and high school levels, my interests have shifted to focus on sports therapy/physical therapy due to my involvement in sports. I have been playing baseball since I was seven (7) years old, dedicating a large percentage of my time and energy to be the best player possible. Because I was always on the…

Albert Einstein once stated, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” Though somewhat ambiguous, Harper Lee truly represents the notion of understanding in her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee’s novel illustrates the importance of attempting to understand someone and thereby valuing them as a human being. Everyday there exists one or more opportunities to show empathy and compassion, though only are brave few are willing to rise to the occasion.…
