Alienation has always been a very common thing throughout history and it is difficult to understand the struggles or feelings that outsiders go through. Christina Perri is known for her emotional songs about love, fear, being human and so on, but Sad Song particularly explains how it feels to be an outsider. Sad Song and Saul from Indian Horse both deal with alienation and they both show how words and actions can make someone feel weak and hopeless. Also, being far away from your loved ones can cause you to feel alone and finally it shows that eventually they start to believe the negative things being said or done to them. The novel, Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese and the Sad Song by Christina Perri both reveal the different struggles and …show more content…
Christina Perri sang, “I wonder what my mom and dad would say/ If I told them that I cry each day./ But it’s hard enough to live so far away.” This quote describes how not being able to be with your loved ones and not having anyone to confide in makes it harder to live on and this can be seen in Saul when he was in the residential school, before he discovers hockey. Saul was known to be the good mannered kid and a good student but in reality he was just isolating himself and crying quietly at night in order to survive as seen in this quote, “When the tears threatened to erupt from me at night I vowed they would never hear me cry. I ached in solitude. What I let them see was a quiet, withdrawn boy, void of feeling.”(pg.55). Whenever Saul is reminded of his family or the bush he would keep it all inside because he would be punish if caught talking about anything before the residential school and because he has no one to confide in causing him to develop depressing thoughts. It is evident that being far away from loved ones cause you to feel alone and this can be seen in Saul and the Sad …show more content…
Firstly, they both reveal that not belonging cause you to feel weak and to lose hope by letting the words and actions affect you and this can be seen in Saul during his games with the white people and in the lyrics, “But the finger that you’re pointing/Has knocked me on my knees”. Secondly, they both show that being far away from your loved ones can cause you to feel alone which is what the lyrics, “I wonder what my mom and dad would say/ If I told them that I cry each day./ But it’s hard enough to live so far away.”, are saying and these lyrics also relate well with what Saul felt in the residential school. Thirdly, they both show that outsiders try to satisfy everyone so they can be loved; this makes them vulnerable which can be seen in the lyrics, “And you swore you were my friend/Now I have to start all over again/Cause no one’s going to take your place/And I’m scared I’ll never save/ All the pieces of a love we made” and in the relationship between Saul and Father Leboutilier. To conclude, alienation has been around for a long time and has been so extreme that people have been scarred from it, we cannot stop alienation but we can stand up against

The Soloist presents the social issue of how isolation and withdrawal from society can affect an individual’s life. Beside his original family of the Fish Clan, Saul later found his second Indigenous family, the Kelly’s, in Manitouwadge. It was Saul’s natural gift in hockey that led him out of St. Jerome’s, a school that “was hell on earth” (78). However, at first, Saul suggested that being at the Kelly’s might be not as nice as it appeared because according to Virgil, he had to work hard to prove himself: “First is you’re not from here and you’re taking a spot away from someone else. Second is you’re a sawed-off little runt and they’re gonna think they have to protect you, stand up for you” (100). Nevertheless, Saul’s innate talent in hockey had gained him his teammates’ respect and made him become an important part of the family: “I was a Moose” (107).…

Being to many places usually out of everyone’s travel plan, Pico Iyer finds that we often feel lonely when we are in a crowd, but not part of the it. In his work, “Lonely Places,” Pico Iyer depicts a unique outlook of several “lonely places” where are geographically connected to many neighbors, but politically or socially isolated. However, by focusing on the temporary situations of the “lonely places,” Iyer underestimated the potential of once undeveloped places and misconstrued the real content of people in…
