Sexual harassment in the healthcare industry, in the United States, is composed of people from different social classes, levels of professions, race, and ethnic background. Despite our assorted lifestyles and beliefs, all people are entitled to equal treatment in the workplace, though their levels of professions vary in the healthcare industry. There are provincial human rights codes that are enforced to prohibit any form of discrimination in the workplace. The three main causes of sexual harassment are discrimination as a form of workplace control, oppression upon one's ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and power of ego. It could simply be that men just find the women attractive at work, seeing it as a compliment. Some women do not make it clear on what they define as ‘sexual harassment’ and so men are left ignorant on how to act towards the women. This is what could potentially happen as a result of employers not having a policy handbook, so that their employees are not made fully aware of certain policies. Some people have confusion as to what constitutes sexual harassment in the social setting, and all people have both different circumstances and preferences. Fully understanding job policies is very important to avoiding the accusation of sexual harassment, this is an action that can be avoided. “Taking immediate action to investigate and address a situation where an employee reports sexual harassment can not only decrease or eliminate your organization’s liability, but it also lets employees know that this kind of inappropriate behavior has consequences and will not be tolerated” (Letke). Sexual harassment in the workplace is a serious offense. However, it can be easily avoided if certain rules and regulations are put in place to prevent them. Within workplaces, anti-harassment policies can be enforced to make people more aware that sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Every worker within a company should be trained and trainings should become a regular routine. Keeping track of this training will help whenever there is a crime of sexual harassment you have records that show a strong history of the anti-sexual harassment training which can help to the defense. A neutral process needs to be put into action so that aggrieved employees can have at least two individuals to inform their complaints to, and they will be assured that employers will investigate all the complaints in a proper manner. There has to be assurance that all employers informed will protect the confidentiality of all workers, and will only share information on a need to know basis.
