i) After doing the reading on Deviance I have decided to write about the deviance of sex workers. I have decided on this particular issue because of the negative connotations and stigmatism attached to sex workers especially towards younger females. I have always thought of myself as a feminist and I strongly disagree with the sexism towards using a woman’s sexual choices to see her as less of a human. Society’s norms of making women feel guilty of their sexual choices and disrespecting women who exercise their sexual freedom is shown most when women who are in porn, strip, or are prostitutes are ostracized and ridiculed. Girls who see it as a means of survival and the only way they can help their working class families out financially. One story that has personally stuck with me is the story of Miriam Weeks. The girl who went through public humiliation and family abandonment due to her hard choice of going into the porn industry. Miriam was accepted into her dream school Duke where her tuition was $60,000. After her father was deployed to Afghanistan her family had no way of paying for her tuition. She did not want to strap her family of debt and was denied government financial aid. Everyone she went to school with was upper class and did not worry about money like she did, she wanted to be free from the financial stress and her part time job was not even making a dent in helping pay for tuition. She decided that she needed to go into porn to help pay for her high tuition costs. Her secret inevitably was found out by people at her university. She was labelled as the school ‘whore’. Boys started to harass her and her friends stopped speaking to her. Her family found out and called her the family ‘disgrace’. Her brother and sister stopped answering her calls. Everywhere she went she was called a ‘slut’ and ‘disgusting’. Her story went viral on the internet and she started to receive death threats from people she did not know. Her family was pestered by reporters questioning their parenting and asking how it felt to have a daughter like her. Many other’s made comments on Mariam’s physical appearance calling her ‘ugly’ and ‘too skinny’. She lost all sense of self-esteem, nobody cared that she was a hard working girl who got straight A’s and was the president of many clubs they only saw her as a ‘internet slut’.
