While sitting at the dinner table on a Wednesday night after a long day of pointless school work, your pure, Christian mother looks you square in the eyes while passing you the potatoes. She then asks you with the voice of a songbird, “Do you think prostitution should be legal sweetie?”. Curling your lips into your mouth and respond with the rising of your eyebrows and widening of your eyes to see if her question changes into a joke, but her expression does not change. Should you answer yes, after all,a young female is to be all for empowering women of all career choices or answer no, because the power of Christ is beaming down on you? Prostitution has been dealt with differently all over the globe, from being a legal normality in Spain to being abolished and frowned upon in 49 of America’s 50 states. It’s a constant jump from, “it’s women using their bodies as they please, it runs along the same lines as running your own lemonade stand” to white republican men just wanting to control another minority. When you put all the facts together, prostitution being legal helps more than it harms. The most prominent issue of illegal prostitution is the astounding amount of STD’s and pregnancies. Prostitutes make up 6-8% of the world’s total of STD’s, but in a deeper thought, 50% of prostitutes have HIV alone. It was found in 2008 that a working prostitute in Nevada, who typically only would work one week out of the month, was on average received a generous check for $100,000 after her “duties”. Now if you take that statistic for each sex worker in Nevada and divide it for federal revenue, you’d get around $20,000 for each sex worker. (Sonntag 1) That is a thick amount of money the 20 trillion dollar indebt national government sure didn’t have before. The facts could travel on for ages on the pros of legalizing prostitution, but the entire world has never been able to agree on one thing, not even climate change. It did take a couple of decades and a few persistent liberals to alter the legalization of marijuana so maybe, just maybe, once women from this generation slide into office or the world becomes more open minded, we might be able to save one less awkward dinner
