Shunning can be social rejection or distance while persistently avoiding, ignoring someone. A person many of us have heard about is Monica Lewinsky. She was shunned by society because she had an affair with a married man who was also the President of USA. She admitted having had sexual acts with then-President Bill Clinton. When authorities saw the closeness between the two, Lewinsky was from the White House to The Pentagon. While working there, she entrusted a co-worker Linda Tripp about her relationship with the President who secretly recorded their conversations regarding the affair with Clinton. She later gave these recordings to be used in court during Clinton’s case. Lewinsky left the Pentagon position. Soon after that the Clinton–Lewinsky relationship broke and the president denied having any inappropriate relations with her. The matter gained popularity in the news and media, and Lewinsky spent the next weeks hiding from public attention in her mother's residence.

It would feel terrible to have people look at me with disgust. I would regret it so much. Having my name and my reputation tainted and tattered. The guilt of having hurt so many people, including my parents would eat at me. I would feel like dying, to free myself from the shame and humiliation. People would mention my name when they would talk about social stigmas. I would feel so lonely and dishonoured.
Lewinsky became a focal point of a huge political scandal and a celebrity of sorts. She collaborated with Andrew Morton who wrote a biography of her life including her side of the Clinton story. She appeared in television commercials for a diet company but the choice of Lewinsky as a role model proved controversial for the company and they concluded her campaign and she received only 30% of the money. Her professional and personal life became very difficult
