In this experiment, identifying the acids, bases, or neutrality of the unknown substance in a specific set are used to find the actual substances. The following sets of substances could have been assigned: Set 1 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Manganese(II) nitrate (Mn(NO3)2), Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH); Set 3 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Sulfuric acid (H2SO4), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH); Set 4 - Silver nitrate (AgNO3), Lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Ammonia (NH3), Water (H2O). From the substances above Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the stronger acid, and Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and Lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2 are the weaker acids. The unknown set given contained substances E (gray liquid), F (dark-clear liquid), G (clear liquid), I (clear liquid), M (clear liquid). In the well plate, drops of the unknown substances were placed into separate wells. The unknown substances were put in order to know which substance was in which well. Separate red strips of litmus paper were placed in each well where the five substances were placed. Observations were made to see if the paper changed in color. If a red strip turned blue then it indicated that the substance was a base. The red strips were left in the solution, one strip of blue litmus paper was placed in each well. Observations were made to see if the blue litmus paper changed color. If the blue strip turned red then it indicated that the substance was an acid. After recording the results, the used strips were placed into the trash and the plastic well was rinsed out with DI water and dried. A list was made for the purpose of knowing which unknown substances were mixed
