In today’s society, women are often depicted as an object for many products. Commercial advertisements are a popular source of this use. The reason women are targeted for this is because they tend to sell more due to showing skin and being provocative with their bodies. The modeling industry is not as glamorous as many say. In fact, it can affect young girls and teenagers into thinking they are not good enough and lower their bodily self-esteem. “Self- objectification has also been repeatedly shown to sap cognitive functioning, because of all the attention devoted to body monitoring. If you do not look like a model with an extremely thin body and skinny waist, then you are not qualified to fit in to society. That is the message that many controversial advertisements display about women and what they are capable of. One infamous example of an ad gone wrong is the Burger King’s Super Seven Incher. The ad focuses on a woman, with her mouth open, on one side of the page but leading up to taking a bite out of the super long burger. But, when looking at the picture, it seems as if she is going to open her mouth for something else more inappropriate. The tagline of the ad is “It’ll blow your mind away.” written in big, white letters across the page.
From the looks of it, organizing this ad did take some time and effort in order to capture the reader’s attention of a clear meaning the company was delivering. The Burger King advertisement did spark a lot of controversy in the world because of the wrong message. Once again, a woman has been put in the spotlight to be degraded by society.
