"Self-Determination theory (SDT) is an approach to human motivation and personality that uses traditional empirical methods while employing an organismic metatheory that highlights the importance of humans’ evolved inner resources for personality development and behavioral self-regulation"(Ryan & Deci, 2000, p. 68). "Self-determination theory suggests that there are different types of motivation, such that people vary not only in level of motivation but also in the source or quality of that motivation. For example, many have to go through life attempting to emotionally undo the emotional damage caused by others. As a result, he/she develops low self-esteem, decreasing the desires to look at life through the eyes of productivity.
