The National School Lunch Program provides students with “healthy” and “nutritional” meals to consume during their lunch period, however, how can a meal that needs to be unwrapped and heated be at all good for us? Most of us don’t know what exactly we are taking into our body. Many students including myself sometimes get ill from these meals. If a healthy and nutritional meal gets you sick then there is something wrong. In order for school lunches to improve we must have an alternative and that is going to our local farmers to receive fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. Knowing that these meals are fresh are reassuring to all students that the food they are consuming have truly great nutrition and are healthy to eat.
Many high school students, approximately 50 answered “no” when asked, “Do you like the school lunch provided for you” (Survey)? The reason to why they said no was because they disliked the fact that they did not know how the food was prepared prior to eating it. Joanne Capano said, “Start them off with a nutritious breakfast and pack them a health- promoting lunch consisting of whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables and protein to ensure they obtain the daily recommended intake of vitamins and minerals. Children need the right foods to keep them going through the day so they can carry out their tasks of learning, playing and growing. Healthy food will give them enough energy to last the school day and will also provide the building blocks for a healthy adult” (Nutrition Meals Make Better Grades).
