We all know that school provided lunches aren’t very good, so why not leave school for lunch? Students are always complaining about how bland as well as small school lunches are, so the best option to fix these complaints is to have an open lunch. Food isn’t just a basic component of survival, it’s also one of the many things that makes life enjoyable; but school lunches are neither nutritious or pleasing to eat. Open lunch should be allowed in Augusta High School because there are many benefits to it like more food options, boosting the local economy, and practicing time management skills. In my interview with Frank Esponoza, he stated that “The reason we got rid of open lunch a few years is back is because the kids would leave school for lunch and just not come back.” This topic was also brought up in the Connect US blog. This is the biggest problem when discussing the concept of an open campus lunch, but it can easily be fixed by taking that privilege away from the students who choose not to return to school; as well as an idea mentioned by Frank Esponoza which was “not all students can drive and for the ones that can’t handle not coming back to school, we could just have venders in vans and things like that set up in the south end of the parking lot.” After Mr. Esponoza brought up this point we went on to discuss how that method is used at events like soccer games held here at the high school, or even places like fairs or …show more content…
In School Revisits High School Open Lunch Policy for 2013, Catherine Martin also mentioned that by students having this opportunity they will be better prepared for later life. With students having a very limited time to get their food and return to the school they will have to take many factors into consideration. The students will first have to think about how long it will take them to get out of the parking lot, since it will be relatively slow with everyone trying to leave at once. Next they will have to find out how long it will take to reach the desired restaurant or convenience store, and once they are there, how long it will take the restaurant to prepare and serve the food. Their last step would be to figure out how long it would take to eat the food and return to school.
