Schizophrenia and Motivation Literature review
Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that is often defined by its signs and symptoms (Giusti-Rodriguez & Sullivan, 2013). It is a lifelong disorder that is often distinguished by its severity and identified by its remissions, symptoms, and functional impairments. Disorders range from schizophrenia to schizophrenia like personality disorders (Siever & Davis, 2004). Schizophrenia is associated with a wide range of symptoms. These are divided into positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are excess-like symptoms. These are excesses of psychosis like perceptual distortions or …show more content…
This is often because they have deficits in their social skills. For example, people with schizophrenia have problems distinguishing others’ emotions, maintaining their own emotions, and emotional memory (McCormick, Snethen, & Lysaker, 2012). This can obviously cause problems in everyday conversations. They also tend to have more negative experiences and fewer positive ones. This often leads to problems with real world outcomes of socialization like community integration (Yamada et al., 2010). They tend to have social aversion, social withdrawal, and interpersonal distortions (Krupa & Thornton, 2008). These issues can lead to a very isolated life for those with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a polygenetic disorder, with a high heritability that also has some environmental factors with it (Giusti-Rodriguez & Sullivan, 2013). Some of these environmental factors are urbanization, immigrant ethnic groups, and exposure to cannabis (van Os & Kapur, 2009). Urbanization tends to often make people more disadvantaged and socially isolated. This means schizophrenia is less likely to be caught and treated in an urban environment. Immigrant ethnic groups tend to be more predisposed to schizophrenia because they often only marry in their own group increasing the odds of heritability. Exposure to dronabinol, a major psychotropic part of cannabis, can model a psychotic state sensitizing a person’s dopamine system. Some people are more susceptible to this psychosis as an early sign of schizophrenia. Motivation can be undermined by environment (Ryan & Deci, 2000b). Motivation is based off of the psychological needs of relationships, autonomy, and competence. If psychological needs cannot be met in an environment this can hinder wellbeing. This can also cause individuals to become amotivated if they cannot meet these needs. Environment would play a role in this person’s daily life and is a major reason for motivation deficits. So if the environment impacts their motivation, it would constantly burden or help them deal with their symptoms. Therefore there is a relationship between
